In 1908, a group of community leaders and businessmen got together to explore the idea of establishing an institution of higher learning in Billings that would serve the students of the entire intermountain region, the only one in an 800 mile radius. Enthusiasm spread quickly over the idea of having a college that would provide higher education opportunities to predominantly rural youth, where none had been available before. Area business leaders pledged $40,000 of the $75,000 needed in the first public meeting and others quickly followed their example, giving Rocky Mountain College the launch it needed. Among these businessmen were Preston B. Moss, Peter and Christian Yegen, Ignatius D. O'Donnell, John Losekamp, Henry White, Judge James Goss and Albert Babcock. The college was seen as an essential opportunity to improve the quality of life, the vigor and richness the community, and spur growth opportunities for the region, while training young people to fill vitally needed professional positions.
Today, ninety-seven years after this first planning meeting, businesses and other community leaders continue to rise to the challenge of educating our youth by offering their financial support. As of June 30, 2005, twenty-four key associates in the Billings business and professional community raised about $20,000 for well-needed student scholarships! These businesses are the hero's of today's students and with hearts full of gratitude, we offer our deepest thanks!
