Freshmen Service Day at RMC aims to serve local community

BILLINGS, August 15, 2016 – On Saturday, August 20, 2016, freshmen at Rocky Mountain College will volunteer to help serve their local community through an orientation event called Freshman Service Day. This event is an annual service day at RMC, which is designed to engage students in service at a local agency.

This year’s freshman class will team up with the following community organizations, including Montana Audubon Education Center, Moss Mansion, Friendship House of Christian Service, Billings Parks & Recreation, Billings Housing Authority, ZooMontana, Family Promise of Yellowstone Valley, and Family Service, Inc.

Beginning at 10:00 a.m., the RMC freshmen will travel to these community organizations and assist with various community projects, including community gardens, fall planting, donation sorting, painting, and grounds work.

“Freshman Service Day is a great opportunity for the incoming freshmen to learn about the community around them,” said Jill Washburn, RMC’s community engagement coordinator. “Rocky Mountain College encourages community involvement for the students to help support RMC’s mission to develop civic responsibility, while also strengthening the local community.”

Washburn added, “It is our goal to help encourage these students to have a goal of volunteerism – not only on Freshman Service Day, but throughout their lifetime.”
