With kind eyes behind dark-framed glasses, I knew this young woman had a story to tell. Jill Washburn, co-chair for the Billings Disaster Action Team (DAT), told me why she is involved with Red Cross. "It comes from the heart," she said. "I'm drawn to the humanity of the mission of Red Cross. Our promise is to help anyone in need."

RMC Rimrock Classic previewed on KULR

Rocky Mountain College is hosting its annual Rimrock Classic Debate Tournament this weekend. About 100 debaters from all over the region will be in Billings starting Thursday to argue their way to a top spot in the forensics world. Rocky team member senior Amanda O'Shea says the secret to their success is preparation. And since they only find out their topic twenty minutes before the round, that means they have to know a lot going in.
"I'm preparing, doing research, doing lots of research because we have a slew of information we have to know because we don't know what our topics are going to be," O'Shea said. "We just kind of have to know a little of everything and when you get your topic you try to learn a little more, so you go into each round prepared."

College. The 22-year-old Stewart, who grew up in Wyola and graduated from Hardin High School, has recovered nicely to become a reliable scorer, tenacious defender and leading rebounder for Rocky, where her grandfather, Ben Pease, also played in the late 1940s.

RMC runners finish fourth and fifth in 3,000

Cesar Mireles of Rocky Mountain College placed fifth in the 3,000 meters Friday at the MSU Open indoor track meet at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.
Mireles' time of eight minutes, 58.89 seconds puts him on the bubble for qualifying for the NAIA indoor track and field championships, Rocky coach Alan King said. The qualifying standard is 8:50, but runners are granted an eight-second allowance for running at altitude, King added.
Rocky had eight runners competing at MSU.
Amber Watson placed fourth in the women's 3,000 at 11:09.49, while teammate Noah Kiprono was 10th for the men at 9:39.42.

It took only a minute during a recent home basketball game for Anthony Allen to show that he can score a bunch of points in a variety of ways.

First, the rugged 6-foot-8, 245-pound forward for Rocky Mountain College drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key against Montana Western. Then he drove down the lane and finished with a crowd-roaring, one-handed dunk. Lastly, he scored off a strong putback after crashing the glass and snagging an offensive rebound.

Fans asked to help former Bear player with medical expenses

Tony Eatinger, a former Rocky Mountain College basketball player, has been diagnosed with a brain tumor and the school is asking Battlin' Bear fans to pitch in and help defray some of the 24-year-old's growing medical expenses, the Billings Gazette reported.

Donation jars were set up at Friday night's men's and women's home basketball games against Carroll College.

Eatinger was part of Rocky's program for three years after graduating from Helena High School in 2004. He graduated from Rocky with a degree in exercise science last spring.

The 6-foot-6 Eatinger last played for Rocky during the 2007-08 season. He averaged two points a game, but was one of the team's leading shot blockers with 21.

He is a personal trainer at Fitness 19 in Billings.

According to a news release from Rocky, Eatinger doesn't have any health insurance and is waiting to undergo brain surgery in San Francisco.

"Rocky Mountain College is a family and we want to reach out to Tony and help him during this very difficult time," Rocky men's coach Bill Dreikosen said.

Lisa Browning, vice president for enrollment services at Rocky Mountain College, doesn't fit the mold of a fast-talking, deal-oriented saleswoman.

But selling the Rocky experience to prospective students is a top priority for Browning and her staff, who prospect for high school students with help from an integrated marketing strategy.

Moving back home to Roundup several years back, Evans began to marry his rancher cred with a more evolved aesthetic. Evans works with area designers, re-creating the prairies of Eastern Montana at one of Billings' most unique restaurants, Walkers Grill, and crafting a 28-foot conference table carved into a tribal spear for a local investment company. As testament to his skill and growing reputation, Evans was named Craftsman of the Year by the Billings Association of Architects in 2004.

Director Gerry Roe describes their characters Randy and Chad as doorknobs. Like the other nine episodes that make up the quirky play "Almost, Maine," this vignette sucks you in because it's odd and funny. But like most good theater, it also has that little part that makes you go "ahh."

RMC 'Undies Run,' other events will benefit mission

Some Rocky Mountain College students plan an "Undie Run" today to focus attention on poverty and homelessness in Billings. The run, in which students wear only underwearlike clothing, will start at 6 p.m. in front of the Bair Student Center. Anyone who doesn't want to run may donate warm winter clothing at a Montana Rescue Mission truck parked on campus. The truck will be on campus this afternoon and for the RMC Homecoming on Saturday. The run is the first of several events organized by the Students in Free Enterprise Rocky in partnership with the Montana Rescue Mission. "Our students will literally be donating the shirt off their backs -- or their coats, pants, shoes, whatever they have on -- as they run across campus," said Karen Beiser, SIFE's faculty advise. No one will actually be in underwear, but participants will have union suits or spandex undergarments, Beiser said. With cold weather coming, SIFE students hope to collect winter coats, sweaters, wool socks, glove and hats. For information, contact Beiser at 657-1170 or karen.beiser@rocky.edu. Or contact Patti Yonts, MRM community relations manager, at 259-3800, 697-0890 or pyonts@180com.net.

Rick and Nicki Larson will be the honorary chairs of the Rocky Mountain College Black Tie Blue Jeans scholarship benefit on Friday, Nov. 6. The Larsons co-founded Employee Benefit Management Services Inc. in 1980 as a way to administer a self-funded health insurance plan they designed for a Montana manufacturer. Over the past 30 years, EBMS has created a system that provides cost-effective plan management through integrated management programs for hundreds of clients located in Montana and throughout the United States.

While building their business, the Larsons also sought ways to build a better Billings, serving on a number of nonprofit boards, including Rocky Mountain College, St. John's Lutheran Ministries, Ronald McDonald House of Billings, Ronald McDonald Charities of Montana, Billings Symphony Society and the Western Heritage Center.

This year's 22nd annual event will be held at the Billings Hotel & Convention Center, with silent and live auctions, a gourmet dinner and music by the Midlife Chryslers. People interested in attending this year's BTBJ scholarship benefit may get tickets by contacting Shari VanDelinder, RMC executive director of development, 657-1173 or vandelis@rocky.edu.
Nick Heffernan has traveled throughout the world, but for his latest adventure he is playing as a speedy, feisty, vocal center-midfielder on the first men's soccer team at Rocky Mountain College. The 21-year old freshman from Hove, England, is serving as the team captain for the 3-6 Battlin' Bears. "I could have, obviously, gone to a university in England," he said. "But I always look for something different to do.
Kovach, who is a 21-year-old Rocky Mountain College golfer, finished second at 1-over 281. He led or shared the lead through the tournament's first three rounds.

On the front nine on Saturday, Kovach opened the door for Dunn's comeback with a mistake he won't soon forget.

He marked his ball before tapping in a short bogey putt on hole No. 8.
One golfer asked Kovach to move the mark, which he did. However, he forgot to move his ball back to the original mark before putting out.

Kovach realized his mistake and turned it into tournament officials. The ruling was a two-stroke penalty.

The Virginia City Players will perform four plays this summer.

The first is "Aggie, The Mail-Order Bride (Or A Damsel in Di'West)," written by Gearld Roe based on Moliere's "The School for Wives" and set in Virginia City at the turn of the century.

Curtain goes up on players' 60th year

When Ben Tone showed up for his second season as lead actor with the Virginia City Players in 1950, he was called on to do more than just act.

The theater company's home was a renovated livery stable with a stage only slightly higher than the flat floor where the audience sat.

Before the second season started, Tone was enlisted to help excavate a slant to the floor and a pit where the rare Cremona photoplayer now sits.

"Actors did everything," he said during an interview in his Bozeman home.

New ERP software in use

We are pleased to announce that today Rocky Mountain College has begun using the new ERP software from Campus Management.

Admissions, Financial Aid, Student Records and Student Accounts are now entering and retrieving data and generating reports from the new system.

The Business Office also worked long and hard to assimilate the new software throughout its systems. This includes cash receipts and other processes.

This has been a year-long process of planning, converting historical data, testing the software and training those who will use the system. The many staff who have worked so hard on this project deserve our thanks and congratulations.

The next step in the process is to install CampusPortal which will replace Campus Web as the primary access for faculty and students. That module will become operational on March 9th in time for on-line registration on March 30th. Over the next few months we will be installing additional modules for Finance and Advancement.

When Rhett Moak creates a ceramic bowl, she starts with a lump of wet clay.

She kneads the ball to get the clay to a uniform consistency, to make it malleable. Then the Billings potter forms the piece by hand or throws it on a wheel, fires it, glazes it and then fires it a final time. The result is a beautiful work of art.

RMC professor guest column: Inauguration shows democracy

For the past 11/2 years I have worked as director of the Environmental Center at the American University of Armenia. During my work there I took a three-month leave of absence to complete a Fulbright Research Grant at the Komarov Botanical Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia, where I worked with a botanist to translate his book from Russian to English. Tuesday's inauguration certainly provoked me to think about the very real differences that exist between the United States and the other countries where I have lived recently.

Armenia is a former Soviet Republic, but Russia refers to it as one of its southern outposts and its western border is protected by Russian troops. On the other hand, this mountainous southern Caucasus country has the largest U.S. Embassy and per capita U.S. aid in the world. Clearly, the United States hopes that both Armenia and its northern neighbor, Georgia, will become democracies in the Western style.

Curator's show featured in Spokesman-Review

Jane Waggoner Deschner

Jane Waggoner Deschner knows how to make something old into something new. While you could call it photographic recycling, it is the transformation of the common snapshot.

She uses found photographs - old snapshots, the ones you've got cartons full of in your attic that never made it to a photo album - as her subject matter.

"They're somebody else's snapshots," said Waggoner Deschner, who has collected more than 10,000 photos, snapping them up from eBay, mostly.

"They were taken for one purpose: to remember a time or place or person. Then, they get lost. When I find them, there's sort of a resurrection."

Lacking artistic merit on their own, these candid, quickly snapped shots, with everyday images of common themes - from sparkling '50s kitchens to ordinary backyards - are scanned into her computer, where she digitally crops and enlarges, enhancing the composition.

In her series titled "Underneath," Waggoner Deschner boldly inserts one or two brightly colored, flat geometric shapes, covering a portion of the black-and-white image, leaving the viewer to wonder what is blocked from sight.

"I want the viewer to look at it with a different eye," she said.

In her "Hilite" series, she uses pale, translucent colors on circular sections of the photograph, which she duplicates and moves "to get the viewer to pay more attention."

Waggoner Deschner, who is a graphic artist in Billings and works as a curator and gallery director at Rocky Mountain College there, said in her artist statement that she's "working to uncover what these records of reality can teach me about our essential humanity."

What she has learned is that there is a great sense of connection through our themes of commonality.

Allyson Kelley wins national award

Allyson Kelley, Rocky Mountain College director of Title III, has been named a 2008 Children's Environmental Health Champion by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Kelley said she represented Rocky Mountain College, which was one of only 12 organizations across the country to be honored for its work to help protect children from environmental health hazards.

Through her work, Kelley helped reduce tribal children's environmental health hazards. At the time, she was RMC Native American Studies project director. She launched and managed a number of successful programs through Rocky Mountain College's department of American Indian Affairs.

Kelley has been directly responsible for removing 7,736 pounds of hazardous and dangerous chemicals from 16 Indian country schools. She has developed and taught environmental health courses for Rocky Mountain College's tribal college partners. She is an advocate for children's environmental health issues ranging from childhood asthma to poverty and overcrowding.

Earlier this year, Kelley was named a Healthy Kids Healthy Schools Hero, one of five people in the region to be honored this year. The annual award recognizes those who work to help protect students and teachers from chemical hazards in schools.
