RMC student receives second Women in Technology Award
BILLINGS, Mont., November 27, 2019 – Rocky Mountain College Computer Science student, Amy Dixon, was named the recipient of the 2019 Zonta International District 12 Women in Technology Award. Amy was previously selected by the Zonta Club of Billings as the recipient of Zonta's first annual "Women In Technology" scholarship of $1,000. The District award means an additional $2000 scholarship award.
The world economy, industry and sciences are becoming increasingly digitized, and these developments are disrupting society and our familiar social processes. Women, however, are still largely underrepresented in information technology and other STEM fields. To create a world in which men and women have equal opportunities, women need to have an active role in technology and technological developments. The goal of the Zonta International Women in Technology Scholarship is to encourage women to pursue education and opportunities in technology and to take on leadership roles in this field.
Ms. Dixon was selected because of her impressive scholastic record and her dedication to volunteerism. She is pursuing a degree in Computer Science (CS) at Rocky Mountain College, with the goal of expanding CS education to low-income Montana students.
"Opportunities in today's economy demand strong technical expertise," said Ms. Dixon. "Montana ranks among the worst states for technology education, with only 40 percent of state high schools offering CS courses. I hope to change Montana's poor computer education infrastructure by empowering low-income and rural students with coding skills that will improve their chances at achieving professional opportunities.”
