What advice do you have for prospective students?

Open your mind and sincerely challenge your thinking. College is an opportunity that can greatly enhance your future and quality of life. Enjoy the journey and take parts of everything from every class. We are not finished products upon graduation, but rather more capable beings with an increased capacity to learn, grow, and develop solutions for the challenges that we face. Choose carefully and look at quality, not the price. At Rocky you have a name and are far more than a social security number.

What is your favorite class to teach and why?

I feel really fortunate to enjoy all of the classes that I teach. I am passionate about the material and enjoy helping students grasp and apply that information. If I had to choose it would probably be Entrepreneurship, because it takes content from multiple studies and disciplines, and applies it to the creative ideas of a unique individual. It gives students an opportunity to look at their skills, abilities, and knowledge base, and develop a venture that has potential in the marketplace. They have to look at all aspects of business and operating one successfully. It gives them another option in the future, and several are now exploring and/or exercising that option. That is really cool. Small business has been an important part of my life, and will likely continue to be until its over. It is a significant part of who I am and what I enjoy doing.

What are you currently reading?

I am currently reading a book called The Power of Less by Leo Babauta. I enjoy reading books by my favorite authors, Jim Collins, Marcus Buckingham, Ken Blanchard, and Patrick Lencioni.

What do you do outside of class?

I do woodworking and cabinetry, welding and metalwork, and I am currently in the process of remodeling and restoring an old bank building in Ryegate that was constructed in 1919. I work at things that I enjoy and have learned over the years. I do a lot of remodeling and custom finish work for customers. I like to draw and am challenging myself to paint more. I love the trades and seek to learn new techniques and applications.
