Explore Areas in Biology

You can major, minor, or double-major in several areas—each has a unique emphasis and career pathways.

Biology (Major)

Take a deep dive into the science of life, from molecules to ecosystems. Benefit from a curriculum designed to support independent research, graduate study, or immediate career entry in biology and health.

Career Pathways:
Medical and allied health professions (MD, PA, PT, OT, etc.), laboratory research (biomedical, genetics, microbiology, environmental science), biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry, conservation, fisheries, or environmental consulting, museum, zoo, or botanical garden roles, and science policy, writing, or communication.

Biology Education (Major & Minor)

Turn your passion for science into inspiration for others. This track combines a strong biology core with educational theory and classroom practice, preparing you to teach middle or high school science.

Career Pathways:
Career pathways include secondary science teacher (middle/high school, AP Biology), science curriculum specialist, educational outreach for museums, nonprofits, and nature centers, and lab manager for academic programs.

Science Broadfield Education – Biology (Major)

For those who want to teach a range of sciences, not just biology. You’ll gain content knowledge in biology, chemistry, physics, and earth sciences, with the teaching practices needed to help students succeed.

Career Pathways:
Career pathways also include broadfield science teacher (grades 5–12), department or grade-level lead in school science teams, and science/STEM educational program director.

Biology (Minor)

Add a robust science background to any major. Choose electives that suit your interests in molecular biology, ecology, anatomy, or behavior.

Ideal Add-On For:
Environmental science, health and human performance, chemistry or mathematics, business (for biotech or science administration), and psychology.

Biology Education (Minor)

Designed for Education majors who want to specialize or gain certification in teaching biology, this minor combines content mastery with essential classroom skills, preparing you for OPI (Office of Public Instruction) standards.

Ideal Add-On For:
Biology, Psychology, Education, Health Science, or Business, giving a professional, science-backed edge in wellness, healthcare, and sports.

Field Experience and Mentorship

Science at RMC is hands-on from day one. You’ll collaborate on laboratory projects, join faculty on field trips across Montana’s ecosystems, and have the chance to conduct your own experiments or research. Many students pursue internships with research labs, government agencies, or private companies.

Our graduates are highly regarded for their adaptability, interpersonal skills, and strong foundation in science—whether entering the workforce or pursuing advanced study.
