Biography

Dr. Stephanie “Stevie” Schmitz earned a B.S. in Secondary Education with an English major and a French minor. She followed this with a M.Ed. in Multidisciplinary Studies and completed her education with an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership. She has taught English, Business and Education courses at the collegiate level and is currently the Director of the Master of Educational Leadership Program and the Director of Distance Education at Rocky Mountain College. Her research interests include educational leadership, student achievement, diversity, public school policy, school board leadership and development, recruiting and retention at the collegiate level, online education and other technology utilized in course delivery. Her husband, Randy, is also a college professor who teaches accounting and business applications. They have five children—three are educators and two are still in college. Erin is the Director of Assessment at Billings Public Schools, Anna is an elementary school counselor at Elder Grove Elementary and Nathan is a history teacher at Central High School. Matthew is completing his Masters degree in Science and Spanish Education and Lauren is working towards completing her art education degree. Randy and Nathan coach high school soccer so free time is often spent watching the game from the sidelines. Pets include Shetland Sheepdogs and Persian cats. Spending time with her only grandson and granddaughter is a highlight. She enjoys working with doctoral students and editing dissertations. Reading and quilting occupy any free time.

To pursue your passion, whatever that may be.

What is your favorite class to teach and why?

EDL 683: Educational Leadership Capstone. The students are nearing the end of the program and have experienced so much growth. They are excited to try out their new skills and perspectives. It is so exciting to be a part of it!

Switch, and Summer.

What do you do outside of class?

Quilt, read and play with my grandchildren!

Red Lodge

What is your favorite thing about RMC?

The people I work with.

What activities or campus organizations are you actively involved with?

Teacher Education Committee, Faculty representative to the Board of Trustee’s

What is your most memorable moment interacting with an RMC student?

Working with students as they graduate from the M.Ed. program and get jobs!

What makes RMC stand out from other schools?

The size of the school, the flexibility, and the support for students.
