106th Annual Candlelight Dinner Set for February 5

BILLINGS, January 8, 2015 – RMC’s 106th annual Candlelight Dinner will be held on February 5, 2015, in the Bair Family Student Center. The time-honored event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a donor appreciation cocktail hour, followed by the traditional Candlelight Dinner at 6:30 p.m.

Rocky Mountain College has celebrated the Candlelight Dinner every winter since 1910, when students, staff, and faculty gathered to share their first meal on the campus of RMC.

It had been a dreary day in January 1910 when the hay wagons were loaded with trunks and furniture to move into the new buildings on campus. Through the cold and snow, they made their way from downtown Billings along 27th Street to RMC's current location.

After arriving cold, tired, and hungry, they went to the dining hall to eat, but the food was sparse and the electricity had not yet been turned on. By candlelight, they dined together on some cold meat, boiled potatoes, beans, and doughnuts. A tradition was born, as that candlelight dinner became a legacy that the College would celebrate each year. This dinner honors RMC's beginning and commemorates the achievements that were made through some trying times of adversity.

The Candlelight Dinner continues to this day to be a tribute to the students, donors, faculty, staff, and alumni of Rocky Mountain College. It is also a time to celebrate all of the new opportunities across campus.

“Not only is this dinner a celebration of the history of Rocky, it also is a way for us to show our appreciation to students, faculty, staff, alumni, and donors,” said RMC Alumni Director Jillian Shoemaker. “This dinner is a time-honored tradition that gives us all a chance to share in the camaraderie of those who are part of the RMC family.”

The dinner is open to the community. Tickets are $20 per person, and include entrance into the donor appreciation cocktail hour, as well as to the traditional Candlelight Dinner. Seating is limited, so reserve your tickets by registering online at, or contacting the office of alumni relations at 406.657.1104 or via email at
