BILLINGS, March 21, 2014 – Soprano Keli Rhea Mitchell (’14), from Golden, Colo., offers a rich program of Fauré, Puccini, Mozart, Mallicone, and Schubert Friday, April 4, at 5:30 p.m. in Taylor Auditorium in Losekamp Hall. Her senior recital concludes with “Genius Child,” a song cycle of ten of Langston Hughes’ poems, composed by Ricky Ian Gordon. Her concert is free and open to all.

“In high school choir, I liked some Broadway but I really wanted to be more like Paula Cole or Fiona Apple. In preparation for college I took my first voice lessons and got my first taste of classical singing,” Mitchell said. “Two years ago, studying with Carolyn Coefield, I upped my practice time and began to really make progress with my classical voice. Since then it's been really exciting to work with Carolyn to really start to make music, instead of just singing on pitch with good technique.

Tenor Travis Kuehn and baritone Koree MacMurdie sing with Mitchell in “Portrait of His Love” from Mallicone’s The Face on the Barroom Floor.

Guitarist Nathan Hansell accompanies Mitchell’s interpretation of four Schubert lieder. “I love all my sets, but Schubert is always a defining composer to try to master,” she said. “His music can seem so simple on the page, but it’s more about the other musical elements you put into it, the most important being the ‘feeling meaning’ of the text and how it works in the music.”

Pianist Sandi Rabas accompanies throughout the recital.
