Rocky men’s soccer opens NAIA National Championship at Texas at Brownsville
BILLINGS, November 17, 2014 –The Rocky Mountain College men’s soccer team was named Monday by the NAIA as one of the 31 qualifiers for the 2014 NAIA National Soccer Tournament. It is the program’s third straight-showing at the national tournament.
The Battlin’ Bears, 11-9, will travel to play the No. 3-ranked Texas at Brownsville Saturday (time TBA). The Ocelots are the only undefeated team in the field as they finished the regular season 20-0.
“We couldn’t be more excited to be headed to Texas to play the only remaining unbeaten team in the country,” said Bears’ sixth-year head coach Richard Duffy. “It should be a great opportunity to test ourselves against one of the top programs in the country.”
The Battlin’ Bears qualified for the National Tournament by upsetting the University of Great Falls 1-0 to win the Unaffiliated Group (Frontier/North Star) Tournament, held on Rocky’s campus Nov. 6-9. Texas at Brownsville qualified by winning the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Rocky-Texas at Brownsville winner will advance to Delray, Florida, to take on the winner of the Lindenwood-Belleville (IL) vs. Lindsey-Wilson (KY) match on Monday, Dec. 1.
The opening rounds of the national tournament are comprised of 15 matches at various campus sites on Saturday, Nov. 22, with the 15 winners joining Northwood (Fla.) – the final site host – at the 56th annual national soccer championship, in Delray Beach, Florida, Dec. 1-6.
