SPRING FOOTBALL - Rocky’s Bears to end hibernation Friday
BILLINGS, Mont. – March 25, 2015 – After being confined indoors since Jan. 5 conducting winter conditioning and weight room sessions, the Rocky Mountain College Battlin’ Bears football team is excited to get outdoors to kickoff its spring football season.
The first of 15 planned practices, which includes two scrimmages, is set to begin Friday, March 27 from 4-6 p.m., on the Rocky practice field.
This spring marks the sixth for head coach Brian Armstrong, who expects 88 players participating in spring drills. Armstrong will enter his seventh year at the helm of the Bears when Dickinson State University comes to Billings August 29. The Battlin’ Bears return nine defensive and six offensive starters from last season’s team that finished 5-6.
“We are getting started a little bit later than other programs,” Armstrong said. “We extended our lifting cycle a little bit.”
Two-time first team All-America wide receiver Andre McCullouch returns after posting big numbers in 2014, when he recorded 87 receptions for 1,161 yards and 11 receiving touchdowns.
The Bears will be searching for a starting quarterback as Bryce Baker graduates in May. As a four-year starter, Baker amassed an incredible 11,796 yards (10,968 passing). Baker’s backup, Chase White, from Shelby, Mont., leads the way as Baker’s successor, but should face stiff competition from sophomore Jacob Bakken (Wibaux, Mont.).
Rocky looks to rely on returning second team All-Conference defensive end Austin Chamberlain (6-3, 230-pound, junior, Helena High), and 6-foot-2, 285-pound senior defensive lineman DuShawn McDaniel (2014 red shirt) to anchor the Battlin’ Bears’ defense.
The Bears will conduct two scrimmages, which will be open and free of charge to the public. The first will take place on Wendy’s Field at Daylis Stadium on Saturday, April 11 from 4-6 p.m. The other scrum will be held at Herb Klindt Field on Rocky’s campus April 18 beginning at 1 p.m.
“We had a very successful winter program,” Armstrong said. “Based on testing we are bigger, faster and stronger. We can’t wait to get outside.”
The Battlin' Bears have also released the 2015 Football Schedule.
