Rocky volleyball garners another post-season academic honor

BILLINGS – Aug. 3, 2015 – For the eighth-straight year, the Rocky Mountain College volleyball team received the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award for the 2014-15 season. The Battlin’ Bears were one of only 49 NAIA programs to receive the prestigious award, that was announced Thursday, July 29.

The award, which was initiated in 1992, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade point average on a 4.0 scale. 

The Battlin’ Bears earned a 3.51 team GPA. Fifteen Battlin’ Bears were named to the Frontier Conference All-Academic team, and had eight individuals earn Dakstats AVCA Academic All-America status.

They also recorded the program’s best season on the court by amassing a school-record 32 wins versus only three losses.

Other season highlights were: ranked as the nation’s No. 1 team for 11 consecutive weeks; won 31 straight matches; finished undefeated in the Frontier (14-0); finished fifth at the national tournament; head coach Laurie Kelly was named the Frontier Conference Coach of the Year; and senior middle hitter, Yang Yang (Yongan, China), was voted the Frontier’s Player of the Year and earned first team All-America honors.

The Battlin’ Bears open fall camp Sunday, Aug. 9. Their season opener will take place at the Biola (University) Summer Slam Tournament in LaMirada, Calif., Aug. 20-21. Rocky will open against The Masters College, followed by the host Biola, Westmont College and Vanguard University.

The Battlin’ Bears’ first home match will take place at the Fortin Education Center on Sept. 1, against crosstown rival Montana State Billings.
