Rocky football to play Northern Colorado in 2016

BILLINGS– September 18, 2015 – The Rocky Mountain College Battlin’ Bears football team will play the University of Northern Colorado of the Big Sky Conference on Sept. 3, 2016, in Greeley, Colo.

Bruce Parker, Rocky’s Director of Athletics, reported that the NAIA Battlin’ Bears and longtime members of the Frontier Conference, will receive $45,000, 400 tickets, and help with hotel rooms when they take on the Football Championship Series UNC Bears.

“I believe it is important to understand that we would have never done this if Coach Armstrong hadn’t agreed to do so,” Parker said. “It’s a big deal for us, and a great opportunity to showcase our program."

Armstrong, who is in the midst of his seventh season as the head coach of the Battlin’ Bears, has favored the idea ever since UNC officials called Parker this past May. “We are excited about getting the chance to play a Big Sky team,” Armstrong said. “I think our players will enjoy the opportunity to play on a bigger stage. It should be fun for our fans too.”

This will be Rocky’s second game against a Big Sky Conference opponent.

In 1997, Eastern Washington, then coached by former Montana State University and current Idaho State head coach Mike Kramer, defeated Rocky 63-7. In 2002, the Battlin’ Bears were scheduled to play Montana State, who opted out, replacing Rocky with an NCAA Division II program.

There have been preliminary talks about the same two Bears’ programs squaring off again in Greeley in 2019.
