RMC debate team competes in Pan American Debate Championshipdebate

BILLINGS, April 12, 2016 – RMC’s Debate Team traveled to compete in the Pan American Debate Championship, which was held in Montego Bay, Jamaica, on March 24-27, 2016. RMC’s traveling debate team consisted of Molly Davis and Alex Orokotan, who both finished in the middle of a competitive division that included more than 120 teams from the U.S., Latin America, and South America.

The RMC team was led by Shelby Jo Long-Hammond, RMC’s director of forensics and associate professor of communications studies. “This tournament is known for the bilingual competition, with 120 teams in the English division and 80 teams in the Spanish division” said Long-Hammond.

Topics covered during the debate included lifting patents on medications, overthrowing the government in Venezuela, infrastructure loans from multinational banks, and the rights of minority populations in communities that are to be developed.
